The story takes place in a Jewish shtetl, where the beautiful Goldele, abandoned as a child, learns that she has inherited a fortune from her father, who emigrated to America shortly after her birth. She decides to set out on a journey around the world to claim her father’s estate and to find her long-lost mother — and perhaps discover true love along the way. Suddenly, every young man in the village begins to court her, including the handsome student Misha, whom she secretly loves. But Goldele declares that she will marry only the one who succeeds in finding her mother.

In the second act, the story moves to New York — a whirl of new temptations, opportunities, and comic misunderstandings. Many suitors compete for the hand of “the golden bride,” among them the charming American Jerome. Yet it is true love, loyalty, and the miracle of reunion that prevail, as Rumshinsky’s radiant music leads the story to a joyful and heartwarming finale.

This production by the Jerusalem Lyric Opera and the Belcanto Vocal Ensemble was triumphantly presented at the Yiddish Culture Festival in Bucharest in May 2025, where it received enthusiastic praise from both audiences and critics. Now the acclaimed performance returns to the Israeli stage — at Beit Shmuel, Jerusalem — to once again bring audiences the charm, vitality, and warmth of Jewish musical theater.
